Recover Flash Drive after IMG Write

Filed under: Tech — Lynn Fikstad @ 09:43

Steps to recover and restore functions of a flash drive after using disk imaging software.

After creating a Chromium disk image using Win32DiskImager.exe on a flash drive, I was unable to use standard format commands or windows Disk Management to delete all the partitions.

The flash drive can be returned to its original function by using diskpart.exe.

Steps:

  • diskpart.exe
  • select disk [the flash drive]
  • list partition
I had one partition 1, but numerous partion 0’s – each had to be deleted
  • Do the following until all partitions are deleted
    select partition [partition number]
    delete partition
  • You will likely get an error message
    “delete partition override” resolved it

Finally, a list disk will show an asterisk in the GPT column.  This can be removed using diskpart.exe only after all the partitions have been deleted.

  • convert mbr
This will remove the GPT asterisk
  • create partition primary

After this, the flash drive can be formatted and it will work as it did before (in my case the Samsung Blu Ray player would now recognize it).
